or "Viet Cong" began as a loose group of approximately 10,000 former communist troops stranded in South
Vietnam following the French Indochina War of the 1950's. Aided by North Vietnamese military forces, the Viet
Cong's primary purpose was to employ guerrilla tactics that would create havoc in South Vietnam and
ultimately aid in the downfall of South Vietnam's ruling government.
